UNION PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Union members are encouraged to BUY UNION whenever possible.  The primary source of information about union-made products and services is the AFL-CIO’s Union Label & Service Trades Department.  The Department’s website has directories of union-made products, along with boycott lists and a monthly newsletter called Label Letter: www.unionlabel.org

GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is part of the U.S. Commerce Department.  It has statistics on family income, earnings, gross domestic product, and other measures of the U.S. economy: www.bea.doc.gov

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), part of the U.S. Labor Department, is the most important resource for economic data on American workers.  Among other things, it publishes the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which is the primary way economists measure the cost of living and the rate of inflation.

FirstGov.gov bills itself as the U.S. government’s official web portal: firstgov.gov

The National Labor Relations Board is the federal agency that oversees union-management relations in the private sector: www.nlrb.gov/nlrb

The N.J. Department of Labor and Workforce Development has information about various laws and programs administered by the Department.  The Department’s website also provides access to New Jersey’s Job Bank, along with economic data about the state’s labor market: www.state.nj.us/labor

The U.S. Census Bureau has extensive data on population, income, and poverty: www.census.gov

The U.S. Department of Labor has information about jobs, benefits, and laws enforced by the Department: www.dol.gov


RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS

American Rights at Work is an educational and advocacy organization dedicated to improving workplace rights, especially the rights to organize a union and bargain collectively.  The organization believes that labor rights in the U.S. should be protected in the same way as other human rights. www.americanrightsatwork.org

The Center for American Progress is a research and educational institute dedicated to promoting justice and economic opportunity: www.americanprogress.org

The Economic Policy Institute is a non-profit “think tank” supported in part by the American labor movement to help promote a prosperous, fair, and sustainable economy: www.epinet.org

The Kaiser Family Foundation provides news, data, and analysis about health care issues and policies through the following web sites: www.kaisernetwork.org and www.kff.org

The Labor Project for Working Families is a non-profit advocacy and policy organization providing technical assistance and education for union members on family issues in the workplace, including child care, elder care, family leave, and work hours: www.laborproject.org

Labor Research Association (LRA) is a non-profit organization that provides research and educational services for trade unions: www.laborresearch.org

Moving Ideas Network consists of more than 120 organizations which provide research and analysis on social and economic issues from a progressive point of view.  Member organizations include such influential groups as the Center for Law and Social Policy, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Citizens for Tax Justice, and the Century Foundation.  Residents of New Jersey may find New Jersey Policy Perspective of particular interest.  All can be accessed from the MIN website at: www.movingideas.org

The New Jersey Work Environment Council (WEC) advocates for environmental and occupational protections to insure safety on the job and in the community: www.njwec.org

Working America calls itself a “community affiliate” of the AFL-CIO.  It is intended primarily for workers who do not belong to a union but who are interested in issues that affect American workers and want to be become involved in lobbying and community organizing. www.workingamerica.org

The Working for America Institute (WAI) is an AFL-CIO-sponsored organization dedicated to creating good jobs and building strong communities.  WAI believes in a “high road” economy based on innovation, quality and skill rather than on low wages and benefits. www.workingforamerica.org

Workplace Fairness is a non-profit organization that provides information about progressive workplace policies, the role of unions, and workers’ rights: www.workplacefairness.org


COMMUNITY SERVICES

The Union Organization for Social Service (UOSS) is a labor-supported organization which provides information and referral to help residents of southern New Jersey obtain access to health, human, and social services.  It is affiliated with the Southern New Jersey AFL-CIO Central Labor Council. www.uoss.org

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is a foundation which sponsors research, education, and treatment of HIV/AIDS and other serious pediatric illnesses.  It has been adopted by CWA as the union’s “charity of choice.” www.pedaids.org/

CWA members are also active supporters of the United Way.
